Hyundai Sonata clocked speeding at 147 mph - 237 km/h!

A Hyundai Sonata V6 that goes 147 mph -237 km/h? Well, that’s the story of a 2006 Sonata V-6 rental car in Arizona that was clocked by cameras going 83 mph over the speed-limit. The driver, Lawrence Pargo , admitted to accusation. He was charged with four counts of excessive speeding, reckless driving, and endangerment.

A curious Arizona newspaper questioned a Hyundai’s ability to reach speeds that high. They contacted some guys over at Car and Driver to further research the plausibility. After failing to locate the original rental Sonata, Car and Driver took a long term Sonata V-6 for a spin around the track and to their surprise did reach a top speed of 144 mph! To the drivers delight, the ordeal plead out of court spending a week in the big house and receiving a kick in the butt from his insurance company (at least we conclude). A speed camera system may be annoying but research shows it slows down speed demons considerably. On the other hand, we certainly don’t live in a certain George Orwell novel either. Via: Car & Driver
