New McLaren P11 Supercar Photos Hit the Web

A couple of months after a Slovenian website posted a series of allegedly official photos (click here for more details) of the so-called McLaren P11 or F2, Car Magazine has followed suit publishing a new set of images that supposedly show an early clay model of the mid-engined British supercar. The styling differences between the P11s shown in the two publications concern details such as the design of the front and rear end, but other than that, they look pretty alike so it is quite possible that the two sets of images are from different design stages. -Continued

Having said that, don't be surprised if the actual production version of McLaren's new junior supercar which is slated to enter the market in 2010 is totally different in design as it is a common practice for automakers to constantly tweak the styling of an ongoing project. Also take into consideration that Frank Stephenson, who until recently was Director of Design at Alfa Romeo, will be taking on a new role as Design Director at McLaren any time soon.

Understandably, Stephenson who is responsible for the design of the MINI Cooper, Fiat 500, Alfa Romeo Mi.To and the Ferrari F430 among other cars, could bring the P11 back to the drawing board.

In terms of the McLaren P11's underpinnings, details are still sketchy but it is said that McLaren's Ferrari F430 and Lamborghini Gallardo rival will be most likely powered by a Mercedes-Benz AMG-sourced V8 engine.

McLaren F2 Renderings Surface on the Web

A Slovenian website called Avtomanija has published a group of photos of what seems to be a prototype version of the forthcoming McLaren F2 supercar that’s scheduled to be launched in late 2010. Of course, it goes without saying that these photos could be the work of a photoshop artist so don’t be hasty to draw a conclusion on the car’s appearance based on what you see here.

McLaren’s new pure-bred two-seater will be based on the P8 mid-engined supercar project that was initially co-developed by the British automaker and Mercedes-Benz as a smaller and lower-priced successor to the SLR but was abandoned by the Germans in 2004. While details are still scarce, it is rumored said that the F2 will be equipped with a mid-mounted V8 powerplant from Mercedes-Benz’s AMG division. -Continued

McLaren Readying Ferrari F430 Adversary

The British supercar maker might be ending its partnership with Mercedes and their co-developed SLR McLaren, but according to Autocar magazine, McLaren is already working on its own supercar that will rival the Ferrari F430 and the Lamborghini Gallardo. Codenamed P11, McLaren’s supercar will be powered by a 550Hp V8 engine that is said to be based on an existing Mercedes-Benz unit. -Continued

It is also said that the P11 will be more compact and lighter than the Italian competition. The P11 is expected to be introduced in late 2009 with sales beginning in early 2010. A year later the P11’s range will be enhanced by a drop-top version along with a more hardcore edition of the Coupe model.
