Citing papers obtained from the liquidated Smart GmbH, German newspaper Handelsblatt is reporting that Smart has cost DaimlerChrysler around €3.9 billion (or $5.21 billion - exchange rate June 12, 2007) over the period 2003 - 2006. It should be noted that while DaimlerChrysler hasn’t revealed any economic details for brands within the Mercedes Car group, it is no secret that Smart has been a loss-loss situation for DaimlerChrysler that even thought about just closing the minicar manufacturer at a point. Despite the fact that a DaimlerChrysler Group spokesman denied to comment on Handelsblatt’s report, he did note though that the Smart brand is heading for its first ever profitable year.
